The Plain of Jars is a megalithic archaeological landscape in Xieng Khouang, it is the main tourist attraction the district as well. It consists of thousands of stone jars scattered around the upland valleys and the lower foothills of the central plain of the Xiengkhouang Plateau. The jars are mostly arranged in clusters ranging in number from one to several hundred. At the moment the site 1,2,3 will need permit to enter, this take around half day for in-depth look.
Plain of Jars
The original Capital - Muang Khoun
Muang Khoun is the original capital of Xieng Khouang, during the secret war it was heavily bombed and was totally destroyed, the new capital is now in Phonsavan which is just minutes drive away from the stone wonder - Plain of Jars site 1. The Muang Khoun is now undergoing rebuild, there are still the french hosptial ruins, Buddhism Stupa, Vat Phia, where the whole temple was being destroyed except the buddha statue.
Vat Cong Secret Tunnel
During the secret war, the vietnamese has build the secret tunnel on top of the XXX mountain. The local government has spend 2 million dollar to make the secret tunnel accessible to tourist. With its 1000+ steps up to the mountain where you can get a panoramic view of Phosavan.
Mouang Kham Hotspring
There are hidden mineral rich hotsprings in XiemgKhouang:
1) 18 km east ofMouangkham
2) 51 km from Phonsavan .
Both have been developed as a resort with bungalows and bathing facilities .You can sit in the stream where the hot spring water mixes the cool stream water and adjust the temperature and relax yourself with the natural surrounding forest.
Thardka Waterfall
Located 3.5km east of Phonsavan, and you will passed the local Hmong Bomb village where the waterfall is 2.5km away from it, you can trek up to the top waterfall and enjoy scenery of the mountain and valley.
Souanhin Stone Garden
This stone garden was first described in print by french archaeologist Madeleine Colani in her 1930 the site is also known locally as Sao Hin Tang (which means standing stone pillars) itself is as much of a mystery as the plain of jars indeed they maybe historically related the stone chosen for the megaliths coincides with used to fashion the jars beneath some of the pillars are tunnel. Large stone discs about a metre in diameter can also be found around the area.
